Is Clay the Next Hottest Dental Trend?

Written by Mariah Chitouras | Jun 11, 2018 @ 05:55 PM

We all saw how charcoal based products exploded on the market and worked their way in as one of the hottest trends of 2017—and show no signs of slowing down—but what is the next biggest trend? Could clay be the next hit?

How does clay help your teeth?

Clay-inclusive toothpaste or toothpowder supports tooth remineralization and—bonus! —it also is a teeth whitener. So, we all know about teeth whitening, but what is tooth remineralization and why would you need it? It’s a process that your teeth go through, naturally, to rebuild enamel. “But I thought once your enamel was worn down, there was nothing that could be done?” When you eat sugar and acidic foods especially, your teeth demineralize¸ and start breaking your enamel down. If you don’t take care of your teeth, they will have a harder time keeping a balance between deterioration and rebuilding.

Testing Process

We can’t just talk about clay-inclusive oral health products and not test them out. We tested The Dirt’s Coconut Oil Toothpaste and The Dirt’s Trace Mineral Tooth Brushing Powder—no, we can’t try just one option.

The paste had the same consistency as your regular toothpaste, but the color is what you’d expect and want with clay as a major ingredient. The powder looked like—well, clay dust. It was also what one would expect when ordering a clay-based tooth powder.

Both options were great—I only have a preference for the toothpaste because I’m always nervous that I’m going to drop and make a ginormous mess of powder all over my bathroom (at least this product is all-natural, so if my dog got to any of it, no worries!).

Both tasted great, had that minty aftertaste (they offer other flavors, such as sweet cinnamon, royal rose cacao mint, and sweet spice, if that’s your preference) that I look for in my tooth products. I loved the delicate balance of an earthy feeling (clay) and clean feeling (mint) that left me satisfied when I was done—sufficiently clean with an all-natural product! I felt like my teeth got the same whitening effect that regular whitening toothpaste gives me. If you’re looking for a natural product that should support remineralization and teeth whitening, both of The Dirt’s paste and powder products are good.

As always, when you are making any changes to your dental care, be sure to consult your dentist. It’s important to keep up with regular dental cleanings so you can discuss your routine and catch anything early, before it gets painful and costly. Many dental plans cover at least two cleanings annually, so be sure you are getting the coverage you need.
