Whether you are jumping into the world of braces for the first time, or simply returning from a regular adjustment, you might need some relief. Let's explore some methods to relieve the discomfort together!
Braces can cause pain and discomfort for several reasons:
- You are new to braces: Embarking on your braces journey introduces a whole new sensation of metal brackets and wires in your mouth. This experience might naturally bring about some discomfort, which will require a certain period of adjustment.
- Pressure on teeth: To move your teeth and jaw into alignment, braces apply gentle pressure over a course of time which corrects your oral posture. While this is exactly what we want overall, it can cause a lot of soreness, discomfort, and general inflammation.
- Brackets rubbing on cheeks: The brackets on braces can rub against the inside of your cheeks causing soreness and even small cuts.
Now, while temporary discomfort is normal, there are many ways you can gain relief. Do not worry, we got you covered!
- OTC Pain Killers: Simple over-the-counter pain medication’s such as ibuprofen can help reduce pain, swelling, and inflammation associated with new or tightened braces.
- Dental Wax: Dental wax is a great and easy to use barrier product. You simply break off a piece, roll it into a ball and press it on to the bracket to keep it from causing anymore discomfort.
- An Ice Pack: Icing sore areas can decrease inflammation and numb the afflicted areas lessening the pain.
- Stick to soft foods: Because of the sensitivity and soreness you will be experiencing, eating soft foods can help. Whether it is mashed potatoes, yogurt, or soup, soft foods minimize the need for jaw movement, which significantly reduces stress on your teeth and jaw.
- A cold sweet treat: By far the most enjoyable method of pain relief. What better way to fight pain than with some ice cream. This pain alleviating technique combines two previously discussed methods: it is soft to eat yet cooling, making it the perfect treat to have after an orthodontist appointment.
While these are great solutions in fighting back against the pain that tends to come with braces it is important to know it should be temporary. If you feel pain or discomfort lasting more than a few days, do not hesitate to contact orthodontist.
