Whether you’re applying false lashes, getting extensions, enhancing your own with lash lifts or simply using mascara; we all love to feel and look good. Through all this, it is so important to make sure our eyes feel just as good. If not done correctly, certain cosmetic products and treatments can cause damage to your eyes. Actress Victoria Principal said it best, “how you feel is very important to how you look - that healthy equals beautiful.”
Healthy application and removal of any lash method should abide by the three S’s. The lashes should be applied in a sanitary setting, with products that are safe to put on and around your eye. Lash treatments like lifts and extensions should be done by a skilled professional.
Sanitary: Thoroughly wash your hands before beginning the process. You don’t want to touch on or around your eye with unclean fingers. Also, make sure all utensils being used are clean (for those applying false lashes at home) or new (for those getting them done by a professional). Your lash technician should always be using new tools between clients, but it is best to make sure of it too. In this case, sharing is not caring. Not even with family or friends. Don’t forget to clean your strip lashes between uses as well and toss them when it is time.
Safe: There’s always a risk you might uncover an allergy you never knew you had. Test products on an area of your skin, such as your wrist, and wait and see if you develop any reaction. Confirm the expiration date has not passed on the products you are using. If you experience any irritation, stop using it immediately. The glue and other chemicals used can cause infection of the eyelid or cornea. This goes for the removal of them as well. Be gentle, take your time, and use the correct products and solutions to remove the glue from your eye without any rubbing, tugging, or pulling that can cause harm or irritation. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but contact wearers you’re in for a double whammy. So be extra careful.
Skilled: In the age of D.I.Y. we want to do everything ourselves, however, that doesn't mean we should. Go to a professional aesthetician. They are best suited and trained to do these procedures safely.
Taking these precautions allows you to enhance your beauty in a safe and healthy way. Taking the time and care to do these can make a dramatic difference to your overall eye health and appearance. If you ever find yourself in need of some insight and assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to your eye doctor for better care tips and to schedule a regular eye exam. Here are to brighter, healthier, and alluring eyes from this day forward.
