So your dentist said you need braces – most of us do. We’re pretty sure the first thing that popped into your mind was dollar signs. How much your braces are going to cost you is a common concern. Prices will vary depending on various factors, such as the orthodontist you see or whether or not you have some kind of dental coverage. It’s in your best interest to do your research and make sure that you are getting the best quality braces at an affordable price – and we’d like to shed some light on how you can accomplish that.
One of the most important things to consider when getting braces is the type of braces you will be purchasing, because surprisingly, there are quite a few kinds! Standard metal braces can run for as little as $1500. However, based on the condition of your teeth and how much work needs to be done by your doctor, that price can increase to over $8000 or more. For example, conditions that may increase the price of your braces include those that are more intricate than a few shifted teeth or a slight overbite. Depending on the amount of work that needs to be done, you may have to wear your braces for a longer period of time.
Traditional braces are usually made of stainless steel. While they can cost up to a few thousand dollars, they are the most basic and cost effective form of dental correction available. Although they are the more cost effective option, there are downsides to these type of braces, such as staining your teeth if you are not diligent in cleaning them. Other metals, such as nickel titanium, are also offered as options that are better for your teeth and reduce the risk of staining.
Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces except that they are almost clear in comparison. These kinds of braces use ceramic to blend with the enamel of your teeth to make them less noticeable. While they can be a few thousand dollars more expensive than traditional braces, this has become an increasingly popular option for teenagers and adults who are looking to enhance their smile without making the braces too visible.
Invisalign braces are the hot seller braces of the moment. These braces come in the form of a clear retainer specifically shaped to your mouth. They are by far the most expensive form of braces, but also the easiest to upkeep and maintain good oral hygiene while using. Not everyone, however, is recommended to use Invisalign. These braces work much slower than the traditional braces and therefore, those in need of extensive dental work will not see the benefits and change in their smile as quickly as if they would be using other forms of braces. Ask your dentist if Invisalign is the right type for you – but be prepared to pay quite a bit extra!
There are a few other braces available, such as gold plated or lingual braces, should you like to ask your doctor about them – but they are not as commonly used as the other types.
Keep in mind that when you are getting a quote on your braces, you will have to also pay for items such as your orthodontic visits, the actual creation of and material used to create your braces, possible retainers and future up keeping tools, and office visits. If you haven’t already done so, it would be wise to first invest in dental insurance to lessen the out of pocket costs you will face without it.
