Imagine receiving a dental exam without ever meeting the dentist. That is, meeting the dentist in person. Teledentistry sounds futuristic, but it is here and emerging in the U.S. And it is a game changer in the dental care realm.
So, what exactly is teledentistry? Simply, dentists and hygienists are teaming up through the internet to treat patients. This expands access to care for those living in areas without a dentist, or those facing obstacles like cost, time, fear of the dentist or unawareness about dental health.
States with teledentistry programs have adopted regulations to expand the types of treatments hygienists can perform without onsite supervision by a dentist, like temporary fillings. These specially trained hygienists can treat patients through programs in community centers, schools or nursing homes.
Once meeting a patient, the hygienist can consult with the supervising dentist on a treatment plan. Sounds standard, right? Here’s where the “virtual” aspect comes in. The hygienist and dentist might discuss the patient's record by phone or internet chat. If needed, the dentist can supervise the hygienist’s work through live video feed. Patients needing follow-up work are referred to the dentist’s office.
Recently, the American Dental Association (ADA) set guidelines for dentists aiming to practice remotely. The ADA says that dental benefit plans should cover remote services the same as in a traditional dental office.
Teledentistry changes the way some of us interact with our dentists. As more states adopt these programs, patients will have greater access, lower cost and more care options.
