Does Dental Health Affect Your Immune System?

Good dental hygiene not only impacts the health of your mouth, but affects the health of your immune system and overall health. Your immune system is connected to every part of your body. If your oral health goes unchecked, bacteria in your mouth can affect many different systems in the body and can result in more serious problems.

Better Oral Health, Better Immune System

Your mouth plays a major role in your immune system and overall health. If you think about everything that passes through your body, it generally comes through the mouth first. The food you eat, the liquids you drink, medicines, and more are consumed through your mouth. It’s no surprise that your oral health is strongly connected to your immune system function. If you have better oral health, you can expect to have better overall health and fewer illnesses.

Most of the problems that can arise with your oral health start with bacteria. Your mouth is the perfect environment for colonies of bacteria to thrive and has lots of nutrients for the bacteria to feed on, such as food particles. Normally the body's natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, keep bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as cavities and periodontal disease.

How to Protect your Oral Health

To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene daily.

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush using fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily.
  • Use mouthwash to remove food particles left after brushing and flossing.
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit food with added sugars.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn.
  • See your dentist at least 2 times a year for checkups and cleanings.

Better oral health can lead towards a better immune system. Be sure to contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health. Don't have a dental plan? Get a free month with us and get the best dental coverage! Click the image below to sign up.
