New York Area Insurance Brokers: Websites you should bookmark

Are you a licensed insurance agent, insurance broker or General Agent in the New York market? If so, you’re going to want to bookmark the following websites.

New York State of Health’s Find a Broker Page:

This part of the state-run exchange for New York allows individuals and businesses to search, locate and contact brokers, navigators, and in-person assisters in New York. If you’re actively selling in the individual or small group market, you are going to want to be sure you’re name is listed here.

Did you know that effective Nov. 14, small groups can purchase SHOP plans for their employees? It’s going to work a little differently than initially planned by the federal government. Originally, companies looking to purchase SHOP products would enroll via the state and federal marketplaces. This has changed for 2014. These companies will now purchase their group plans directly through you, their valued broker or through an insurance carrier offering certified Qualified Health Plans (QHP) or Qualified Dental Plans (QDP). As a broker, this is great news…you can continue working directly with your small group clients, offering them benefits they need for their employees. Now’s a great time to reach out to those clients and help them navigate this new change in health care reform.

Finding SHOP-certified products:

So, you now have the ability to market directly to your small groups. But how do you place them into a certified QHP or QDP? It’s easy – just search for them on this website. Find medical and dental plans that are exchange certified and then do what you do best: present the value and close the sale.

Become certified to sell SHOP products and individual plans on the Health Plan Marketplace:

You are already licensed in the territories you sell but did you know that you need an additional certification to sell SHOP and Individual products through the state marketplace? To take advantage of this additional revenue stream, register for the training and certification. An added perk: this training will give you eight continuing education credits!

Once you’ve completed your training, you’ll receive an email from the New York State of Health. This email will contain a link with an invitation to sign up for the Small Business Marketplace as a broker.
