Brokers: Talk to Your Groups About Offering Dental Insurance

Dental insurance, already a popular offering by employers in the U.S., continues to be in demand by employees and job seekers. A study showed that offering ancillary benefits like dental insurance is considered a differentiating quality among employers.

The Affordable Care Act mandates employers with over 50 employees to offer medical insurance, but no such requirement exists for dental insurance. While an estimated 90 percent of large companies offer dental coverage to their employees, about half of small businesses do not.

Here are a few quick points for brokers to remind clients about the value of offering dental insurance plans to their employees.

All in a day’s work

Employees with dental coverage are more likely to seek regular, preventive care for themselves and their families, which lowers the risk of serious dental problems. The U.S. Surgeon General reports that employed adults lose more than 164 million work hours annually due to dental issues. Further, over 51 million school hours are lost for children.

It’s a good business decision.

Not only can dental coverage cut down on employee absences, but it can also help retain personnel, considering the popularity of dental benefits among workers. Various types of dental plans on the market are affordable to businesses and their employees while offering quality care.

Oral health = overall health

The importance of good dental care to overall health is often underestimated. Poor oral health can contribute to cardiovascular disease, diabetic complications, and even premature birth. Good oral care goes beyond brushing and flossing. Regular cleanings and exams help detect and care for problems early.

Employees are your clients’ most important assets. As your clients strive to provide value to their staff members, offering dental insurance can be a big standout. Educating your customers on the importance of dental health and the risks associated with improper care is another incentive to offer dental insurance as part of employee benefits.
