According to a recent study published by the American Dental Association (ADA), only 30 percent of millennials see dentists on a regular basis. This creates an opportunity for you as insurance brokers.
While just 11 percent of millennials do not have health insurance, many health plans do not include dental exams, cleanings, or other procedure coverage. So it appears that there is a vast need for access and education among the millennial audience when it comes to dental benefits and oral health. That's where you come in -- because an annual visit to the dentist is crucial and should never be neglected!
According to an article written for Forbes.com:
- 1 in 3 millennials are “reluctant to smile.”
- More than one third have difficulty biting and chewing.
- 85 percent of millennials have tooth decay.
Not only are millennials not receiving proper dental care, but they are cutting back on their socializing and are insecure when interviewing for jobs. As if tooth pain and anxiety surrounding poor dental conditions aren’t bad enough, attaining affordable dental insurance is viewed as difficult for much of this generation. Many of them are struggling to find jobs and pay off student loans. A lot of them also work part-time or as freelancers, so they might not have access to employer-sponsored dental plans.
But with your knowledge and expertise, you can help this generation and target selling dental insurance to millennial customers through social media or other avenues. While dental benefits might be low on their list of priorities, it’s key to educate them on the cost of an individual plan and how in some cases, it can work out to dollars or cents per day! Also, the link between oral health and overall health is absolutely critical to point out -- as studies show that those with gum disease have a much stronger likelihood of developing heart disease, diabetes and other serious ailments.
Show millennials that their insurance coverage can be:
- fast, inexpensive and quality service
- easy-to-access office settings
- convenient, transparent costs and sound information
Without regular preventive care, such as x-rays, cleanings, and check-ups, millennials are looking at serious dental problems down the road. More than half of U.S. adults over age 30 have gum disease. The cost and pain of emergency dental procedures are avoidable. Help teach this prospective client base about their options, such as discount dental plans, or other insurance opportunities today.
