Patience is a Virtue: Keeping your Cool when the Going Gets Tough

Frustrations and pent-up emotions can have a major impact on your mood, making it difficult to stay positive and productive. As much as you love being a dental insurance broker, there is a great deal of pressure to perform. Running a business, managing clients, meeting goals, making the level of commissions that you desire, all take their toll on you.

Surely, you've been told that patience is a virtue, albeit an elusive one. Keeping your cool and managing your emotions at work is not just a good idea—it is the key to success. Following are some tips for managing frustrations, dealing with anger and keeping your head on straight so you can face any challenge that comes your way.

The Power of the Pause

When you find yourself becoming angry, frustrated or annoyed with a colleague, client or situation, take a moment to stop and think about what's happening. Understand that in these instances, if you react, you are allowing your emotions to take over your actions. If you find that it is difficult to diffuse the feelings, excuse yourself from the situation, take a walk, or sit quietly and reflect. It may not be easy, however, over time you'll become more and more adept at it and you'll notice that the actions, or inactions, of others bother you less and less.

Put it into Perspective

It's incredibly easy to let small things become major issues, causing you to stress out and lose your cool. The reality is, there are very few things that occur on a daily basis that are earth-shattering, life-altering events that require you to become so high-strung. Ask yourself whether the situation you're facing at the moment will be of any consequence in a few hours, days or years. Chances are, it's not. Even in instances where there is a major change that will impact you for the long-run, you're perfectly capable of handling it—otherwise you wouldn't have made it this far.

Don't take it Personally

We all encounter negativity from others in our daily lives, and especially in the workplace. Everywhere you turn, people are trying to muddle their way through the day, just like you. Whether it's an unfriendly tone in someone's voice, a rude client or a boss that is never satisfied, you must remember one important thing: it's not about you. The reality is, every person you encounter has his or her own set of stressors and influences that mold the way they interact with the world. Even if you've done something they find annoying or that angers them, their reaction is solely their responsibility.

Take Some Time for You

Honestly evaluate your personal care routines throughout the day. Regularly rushing out the door in the morning with little more than a cup of coffee, on just a few hours of sleep, certainly doesn't do you, or anyone else, any favors. Make sure you're getting a good night's sleep, eat a protein rich breakfast and leave yourself plenty of time to get to the office without battling traffic. You'll notice an immediate change in the way you feel. When lunchtime rolls around, don't skip it. Go for a walk, have a sandwich and a bottle of water, and take a mental break. Finally, at the end of the day, leave your work behind and enjoy your evening with friends or family. You'll feel less stressed and better able to manage the challenges you encounter every day.
